14-year-old dies in collision
On Wednesday, August 19, 2023, at approximately 8:11pm, there was a fatal collision on Flat Creek Road, near Lumber Road, approximately 7.2 miles North of Darlington. A 2014 Chrysler van was going North on Flat Creek Road. The van traveled off the roadway to the left then, overturned multiple times, according to Master Trooper Mitchell Ridgeway. The driver, 14 year-old Michael Adrian Vanzandt, was transported by EMS to McLeod Regional Medical Center where he later passed away, according to Darlington County Coroner J. Todd Hardee.
The incident remains under investigation by S.C. Highway Patrol.
