The City of Darlington is making significant strides in enhancing public safety and improving employee compensation in its proposed budget for the fiscal year 2023-2024. With an allocation of nearly $8 million, the city aims to attract and retain qualified law enforcement officers, ensure fair wages for all employees, and prioritize the well-being of its first responders. Some key changes are proposed in the budget and their potential impact on the community could be extremely positive.

In a move to remain competitive with neighboring law enforcement agencies, the City of Darlington has significantly increased the starting pay for certified police officers. The proposed budget reflects a 31% increase, raising the starting pay from $32,500 to $42,500. This substantial raise aims to attract top talent to the Darlington Police Department, ensuring a highly qualified and motivated police force. By offering a more competitive salary, the city hopes to improve recruitment efforts and ultimately enhance public safety for its residents.

Recognizing the invaluable services provided by first responders, the proposed budget includes a 2% to 12% pay increase for all first responders. This adjustment aims to reward their dedication and commitment to the community’s safety and well-being. The City of Darlington values the tireless efforts of its firefighters, paramedics, and emergency medical technicians, and aims to retain and motivate them through fair and competitive compensation. This pay increase not only acknowledges their contributions but also ensures the city maintains a highly skilled and motivated first responder workforce.

The City of Darlington has taken a proactive step in addressing employee compensation disparities by conducting a comprehensive Wage and Classification Study Report. As a result, the proposed budget includes raises for all employees, based on the study’s recommendations. By rectifying wage inequities and providing fair compensation, the city aims to boost morale and enhance employee satisfaction. This investment in the workforce will foster a positive work environment and increase productivity across all departments. Additionally, this initiative demonstrates the city’s commitment to valuing and recognizing the contributions of its dedicated employees.

In addition to the general wage increases, all first responders were granted a mid-year raise during the fiscal year 2022-2023. Ranging from $2,500 to $6,000 per year, these raises were implemented to further acknowledge the exceptional efforts of these front-line personnel. The mid-year raises reflect the city’s commitment to supporting its first responders, recognizing their invaluable contributions, and ensuring their financial well-being. This gesture demonstrates the city’s dedication to the welfare and professional development of its first responders and strengthens the relationship between the community and these essential service providers.

The City of Darlington’s proposed budget for the fiscal year 2023-2024 emphasizes its commitment to public safety and employee well-being. By significantly increasing the starting pay for certified police officers, providing pay raises for all first responders and employees, and implementing mid-year raises for first responders, the city is investing in its workforce and fostering a thriving community. These notable changes reflect the city’s dedication to attracting top talent, ensuring fair compensation, and enhancing the quality of life for all residents of Darlington.

In other business, council voted to approve the bid of $84,045 from Mr. Roosevelt Scott for repairs to 410 Pearl Street, which has been used for years as office space by the City of Darlington. The building is across the street from Piggly Wiggly. Work to be done includes building a ramp for the handicapped, inspecting and repairing/replacing all old electrical wiring, repairing HVAC duct work and repairing any drywall or other structural damage. The bid includes all materials, labor and a lift to insure the safety of employees on the job.

The next meeting of the Darlington City Council is scheduled for July 11, 2023.
