Three Darlington County high-school athletes signed on Feb. 2 to play football for colleges in South Carolina and Alabama.
At Trinity Collegiate School, Reggion Bennett signed to play for Jacksonville State University in Alabama and Grant Epps signed to play for S.C. State University in Orangeburg. At Lamar High School, Patrick Anderson also signed to play for S.C. State.
Bennett, the SCISA Class 3A Player of the Year, said he went to Jacksonville State this past weekend, still undecided, and was impressed. The coaching staff, he said, “treated me like I was already there.”
Bennett earlier was committed to playing for the University of Buffalo, but he said, “Due to some coaching changes, I just didn’t want to put myself in that situation.”
He said he owes a lot to Trinity and his teammates. “They always brought me up when I was down.”
Lamar’s Anderson said going to play for S.C. State is a wish come true because he feels he will get a great education there as well as big opportunities in football. “It felt like home,” he said of visiting the campus and the coaches there.
Epps, who also opted for S.C. State, said that, for him, the Orangeburg school simply stood out more than others he considered.
