Darlington County Humane Society breaks new ground

On Wednesday, July 19, 2023, a large crowd gathered to celebrate the groundbreaking for the new Darlington County Humane Society at 580 East Washington Street (behind Lowe’s) in Hartsville. Numerous local dignitaries were on hand to join in the celebration. S.C. Senator Gerald Malloy and Rep. Cody Mitchell presented a check for $2,264,000 from the State of South Carolina, to add to the $5,000,000 raised for the project by the Shelter’s Fundraising Committee. In 2021, the Byerly Foundation Board Members committed $500,000 for the Darlington County Humane Society to build a new facility in Hartsville. That dream is about to be fulfilled. Designs for the new facility, which should be completed within the next 12 months, were also on display during the event.
