Darlington Police Department and School District issue statements about shooting

The Darlington County School District announced that, this afternoon, law enforcement responded to a shooting in the parking lot of the Darlington-Lee Adult Education campus in Darlington. Darlington County School District, at the direction of Darlington Police Department, placed district buildings and schools in the area on a secure status. Law enforcement confirmed that one Adult Education student was shot in the incident. According to Darlington County Coroner Todd Hardee, the student was transported to a medical facility where they were pronounced dead.“ This is an incredibly tragic situation. The loss of a young person is heart wrenching,” said Dr. Tim Newman, DCSD superintendent. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of our student. We are grateful for our law enforcement officers who responded to the situation. We are also grateful for our school staff who responded quickly to secure our buildings.”
At the direction of law enforcement, the secure status was lifted at all DCSD schools for dismissal. DCSD will work with law enforcement as they continue to investigate this situation.

The City of Darlington Police Department issued the following statement: On October 10, 2023 at approximately 12:30 PM Darlington Police Department responded to shots fired in the area of 100 Magnolia Street in the city limits of Darlington. When officers arrived on scene, a male subject was found. The subject was transported to Mcleod Medical Center in Florence. The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division has been contacted for assistance with the active investigation. At this time there is no immediate threat to the surrounding area.
