DCHCM holds meeting

On Tuesday, May 4, 2023, the Darlington County Historical Commission and Museum (DCHCM) Board met at the Voters Registration Office, 131 Cashua Street in Darlington. Jannie Harriot, Chairperson of the South Carolina African American Heritage Commission, gave an update on the improvements and exhibits at the Orangeburg Museum, as well as making a presentation about the marker at the S.C. Statehouse commemmorating the Civil Rights march in Columbia. Bill Segars (far left) gave an update on the new museum construction. The sheetrock is being completed now and interior painting is currently going on. Completion date is slated for late July or August of this year. Museum exhibit cases are arriving and being put together. Because of the need for their own skilled museum staff to move, setup and display the exhibits, a motion was made to temporarily close the DCHCM for approximately 3-4 months while that took place. The motion passed. The board agreed that the museum should be finished and all exhibits completed by the fall holiday season. PHOTO BY STEPHAN DREW
