DISCOVER LAMAR: There’s so much to discover in Lamar

On a casual walk down Main Street in Lamar, SC, you will discover stores with friendly staffs, the post office, the library, delicious food and more. Go grocery shopping or fill your car with gas. It’s all within a convenient distance to each other. Stop in at the Town Hall for any official town business or council meetings. The people of Lamar are always ready with a friendly greeting and a smile. It’s the kind of place where you never meet a stranger. If you’re from Darlington County, there’s a chance you might even pass a relative. 

Last month, they held their annual Egg Scramble Jamboree with huge crowds everywhere, enjoying food, vendors, music, activities, and shopping. There was a nighttime parade and a daytime parade.

The 7,013-yard Governor’s Run Golf Course has a full-service Pro Shop and Bar & Grille, and has been rated 4.5 stars by Golf Digest’s “Best Places to Play.” You may want to pay tribute to the veterans who served by stopping by the Lamar Veterans Memorial at Parnell Park, where you will see the granite monument, inscribed with “All Gave Some! Some Gave All!”. The names of military veterans from all branches of the U.S. military are listed on the brick walls. These names range from the American Revolution to the war in the Middle East. The Althea Garden Club tends to the beautiful flowers there.

The Lamar’s Beautification Commission is always busy, preserving projects around the town to protect historic buildings like the Mims House, where you can savor some tasty homecooking and host your upcoming event. 

Just casually strolling down the streets of Lamar, you will see schools, churches, grocers, historic homes, businesses which have deep roots in the community, restaurants, hair salons, gas stations and stores where you can go to find “just the right thing” for any occasion.

This sleepy little town, with the help of the wonderful, dedicated residents represents community unity, coming together and looking forward to town growth, development and engagement through civic activities. They’re known as the town with a big heart and an even bigger vision.
