Quilt Challenge to be held

Swamp Fox Quilters Guild will open their Annual Quilt Challenge at the Hartsville Museum June 1, 2023.  A number of awards will be presented for excellence in quilting.  The 2023 theme, “Lines and Triangles and Squares Oh My!” requires members to create a quilt using a pattern with some element of the title, “Lines, Triangles, and Squares.”  The Guild members voted on the choice of them, a clever play on the title of the song “Lions and Tigers and Bears” from the movie “The Wizard of Oz.”

Quilt categories for this year’s challenge include:  distinction and merit in piecing quilt blocks, including using standard machine sewing and using a foundation to piece the quilt block; Also, hand and machine appliqué; hand and machine quilting; and original art designs.  A new category this year is Special Surface Design, which may comprise unusual treatment to the quilt’s top including atypical materials.

One quilter will be honored with a “Best of Show Award,” and one will be chosen for the “People’s Choice Award.”

Visitors to the exhibit will have the opportunity to vote on their favorite quilt with the winner to be given “The People’s Choice Award.”

The quilts will be on exhibit at the Hartsville Museum, 222 North Fifth Street, in Hartsville.

The free exhibit will continue throughout the summer, until the end of August.  Museum hours are 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p. m. on Saturday.
