Scott named Elk of The Year

Darlingtonian Roosevelt Scott has been named 2023 Elk of The Year by the South Carolina State Association of Elks. The 100th Anniversary Awards and Civil Liberties Banquet was held on Friday, May 12, 2023 at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Columbia, SC.

Scott was born and raised in Darlington. He is a graduate of Mayo High School, where he excelled in football. His athletic exploits earned him a scholarship to Denmark Area Trade School (now known as Denmark Technical College) where he was named All-Conference while earning his Associate’s Degree in Industrial Education.

Upon graduation, he worked on Capitol Hill for Sixth District Congressman Ed Young and has been active in his community serving in numerous fraternal organizations like the Improved Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks of the World, serving as a Grand Lodge Trustee, an Assistant to the Grand Lodge Beauty and Talent Director, and an active member of Pee Dee united 1679 in Darlington.

He is a charter member of the Imperial Turtles Council #1 in Darlington and, is a charter member of the North Carolina and South Carolina Knights of Pythias, Shining Star Lodge #235, Grand Trustee and Past Grand Chancellor Commander. He is a charter member of the Dramatic Order Knights of Omar Medina Temple #360, Grand Trustee, and is an active member in the Prince Hall Masonic Order serving Crescent Temple 148 in Florence, South Carolina and Friendship Lodge Masonry in Darlington, as well as part of the Consistory for the Pee Dee area.

School is also heavily involved in several civic organizations, serving on the Board of Trustees for Genesis Healthcare, as Finance Chairman and a member of the Darlington Country Club and also as a volunteer firefighter for the City of Darlington before retiring after 16 years from that position.

He is currently CEO of Scott’s Construction Company, having been in business for over 45 years. Scott is one of the few African-American contractors in South Carolina, certified under the State Highway Department and was recently honored as “Man of the Year” by the City of Darlington for his exemplary community service to the benefit of the City. He has been married to Thomasina Sanders Scott for over 47 years and is a member of Bethel AME Church in Darlington. He was also an April 2023 inductee into the Denmark Technical College’s Hall of Fame.
