South Carolina African American Heritage Commission honors women

The South Carolina African American Heritage Commission will honor women in a women’s history program, “Honoring South Carolina’s Trailblazing Women: Our History is Our Strength” on Sunday, March 12, 2017 at 4 p.m. at the Black Creek Arts Gallery, 116 West College Avenue, Hartsville.

The program will include a keynote by Victoria Smalls, Director of History and Culture at the Historic Penn Center followed by a panel discussion by trailblazing women. Honorees will include former state senator Maggie Wallace Glover, former Hartsville Mayor, Flora Hopkins, current City of Darlingon Mayor Gloria Cheeseboro Hines; current City of Camden Mayor, Alfred Mae Drakeford, former County Council Woman, Wilhelmina P. Johnson, Mrs. Lovis Thomas, and former SC House of Representative Dennie Neilson.

The South Carolina African American Heritage Commission was created by the South Carolina General Assembly for the identification and preservation of historic site, buildings of lifeways of African Americans in South Carolina.
