US-401 bridge open

The bridge at US-401, over Sparrow Swamp, outside Lamar, is open again. Work started in late March and, as promised S.C. Dept. of Transportation (SCDOT) has it open again by the end of June.
The majority of the work on this bridge took place underneath it. SCDOT placed reinforcing wraps around some of the timber piles, performing repairs to the bottom of the bridge deck and to girders, painting the steel girders, and placing rip rap under the bridge for protection from debris rubbing against the structure under water. Other work included structural steel supports at some of the piers, resealing the joints on the bridge deck, and repaving the asphalt surface over the bridge. PHOTO BY STEPHAN DREW
